Greenland ratifies US deal allowing two military bases

Greenland's parliament on Tuesday ratified a security agreement with Washington that allows the United States to build two military bases on the vast Arctic island.

Sixteen members of the Inatsisartut voted for the text, seven abstained and none voted against.

The agreement was signed in New York in September by US President Donald Trump and the Danish and Greenlandic leaders. It also blocks countries outside the European Union and NATO from strategic sectors, with the stated aim of stopping China or Russia from gaining influence through investments.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. The Danish parliament is expected to ratify the agreement on November 19.

Since returning to the presidency in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly said the United States needed to control Greenland for strategic reasons, alarming Denmark and other partners in NATO.

Uncertainty notes

The agreement still awaits expected ratification by the Danish parliament.
