Gaza attacks kill five, civil defence agency says

Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli airstrikes and gunfire killed five people across the Gaza Strip on Monday, while the Israeli military said it had targeted "several terrorists".

Mahmoud Bassal, a spokesperson for the civil defence agency, said three people were killed around Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. He said one was killed by Israeli gunfire, one in a drone strike on a tent sheltering displaced people and one in a drone strike targeting a group near a displacement camp.

Bassal said one person was killed in an Israeli strike on a civilian vehicle in Gaza City, in the north. He said a fifth person was killed in central Gaza by shrapnel from a bomb dropped by a drone.

The civil defence agency operates as a rescue service under Hamas authority. The Israeli military, asked for comment, said it had "struck several terrorists" in those areas.

A ceasefire took effect a year ago, but violence in Gaza has continued, with Israel and Hamas regularly accusing each other of violations. Gaza's health ministry, which operates under Hamas authority and whose figures are considered reliable by the United Nations, says more than 1,550 Palestinians have been killed since the truce and more than 74,600 since the war began. The Israeli army says it has lost seven soldiers and one civilian contractor since the ceasefire.

Uncertainty notes

The civil defence agency and Israeli military gave different descriptions of those targeted.
The number of injured people was not specified beyond "several".
