Credit Mutuel Arkea cyberattack caused fraud, bank says
French regional bank Credit Mutuel Arkea said Wednesday that a cyberattack allowed fraudulent transactions, while reports put the alleged amount at $133 million.
The bank, an arm of Credit Mutuel in western France, said the attack was under control and that there would be no financial consequence for its clients.
Credit Mutuel Arkea did not give details on how the attack was carried out, who may have been behind it or how much was lost.
Independent blockchain investigator ZachXBT first publicised the alleged $133 million figure, which was then widely reported by media. ZachXBT said the stolen funds had been routed through multiple accounts on crypto exchange platforms.
Credit Mutuel Arkea said its teams acted after detecting the attack and temporarily suspended some transactions to secure operations and prevent further fraudulent activity. It said the operations would resume after final checks and security measures were completed.
