Zelensky backed by UK PM after Trump clash

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday that he had his “complete solidarity” after Zelensky clashed with US President Donald Trump over a diesel deal with Russia, Downing Street said.

In a readout of a call between the two leaders, Burnham’s office said he recognised that “the past 24 hours had been difficult for Ukraine”.

Downing Street said Burnham and Zelensky discussed “the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia”. It said Burnham made clear the UK would keep strengthening sanctions on Russia and take further action to constrain Russia’s war machine, building on new UK designations against Russian targets announced this week.

The two leaders agreed to meet in person in the coming days, according to the readout.

AFP reported that Trump and Zelensky traded barbs on Saturday after Washington moved to ease sanctions on Russian diesel and Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least 21 people, including four children.
