Verity tops North American box office with $32.6m debut
“Verity” led the North American box office in its debut weekend with $32.6 million, industry monitor Exhibitor Relations said.
The MGM thriller stars Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett and is adapted from a novel by Colleen Hoover. David A. Gross of FranchiseRe Movies said the opening was well above average for a psychological thriller despite weak reviews and audience ratings.
Sony's “Resident Evil” held second place with $12.5 million for the weekend, bringing its North American total to $125 million after three weekends in theaters.
Paramount's “Heart of the Beast,” starring Brad Pitt as a former soldier surviving in the Alaskan wilderness with his combat dog, stayed third with an estimated $11 million in its second weekend.
“Digger,” a black comedy starring Tom Cruise as a powerful man who sets off a climate disaster and then tries to present himself as the person who can save the world from it, opened fourth with $8 million. Gross said the numbers were not bad for a black comedy but were modest for a Tom Cruise film.
“Primetime,” starring Robert Pattinson as reality TV host Chris Hansen, fell one place to fifth with $8 million. The rest of the top 10 was “Forgotten Island” with $7.2 million, “Avengers Endgame: Encore” with $4.4 million, “Practical Magic 2” with $2.65 million, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” with $2.45 million and “The Odyssey” with $1.3 million.
