Turkey under-15 social media ban starts November 1
Turkey has formally declared a ban on social media use by children under 15, with the measure scheduled to take effect on November 1.
The decision was published in the official state journal on October 10 after parliament adopted the law in April. It says social media providers must take technical and administrative measures, including age verification, to apply protections for young people.
The measure also says no service likely to have an addictive effect on children may be offered.
Turkey joins countries including Australia that have introduced restrictions on children's use of social media. Britain and France are also pushing for similar measures, aimed at digital risks including screen addiction, lack of sleep, bullying and eating disorders.
Rights groups have complained of restrictions on freedom of expression in Turkey targeting LGBTQ communities, the media and the political opposition. Numerous social media accounts have been blocked in recent weeks.
