Turkey rock spire collapse kills 3 in Cappadocia

A rock spire collapse killed three people in Turkey's Cappadocia region, including a French national and a newlywed Turkish couple, officials said Friday.

France's foreign ministry confirmed that one of its nationals died after a rock formation collapsed at a tourist site in Cappadocia on Thursday. The ministry said it was in contact with the woman's family.

The Turkish couple died after a rock formation known as a fairy chimney crumbled in central Turkey following a landslide.

Cappadocia is known for cone-shaped rock formations, underground cities carved into rock and early Christian churches. About 4.5 million domestic and foreign tourists visited the area last year.
