Turkey mine collapse kills five workers in Soma
A mine collapse in Soma in western Turkey killed five workers after rescuers recovered the bodies of three miners who had been trapped, local authorities said Friday.
The collapse happened Thursday at a mine in Manisa province, about 100 kilometres northeast of Izmir. Authorities said seven workers were caught in the accident.
Two miners’ bodies were recovered earlier from the site and two other workers were rescued and taken to hospital. The remaining three bodies were recovered early Friday, bringing the death toll to five.
The local governor’s office said search and rescue operations had ended.
Soma was the site of Turkey’s deadliest mining disaster in 2014, when 301 miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning after an underground fire triggered by an explosion.
