Trump protesters rally weekly in Pennsylvania
Dozens of residents in eastern Pennsylvania gather every Monday to protest silently against US President Donald Trump near the office of Republican congressman Ryan Mackenzie, who represents the Allentown area.
The group, mostly middle-aged retirees, has been meeting weekly since Trump returned to power in early 2025. On a recent October day, about 40 people stood on both sides of a road for about an hour with signs reading “Stop Trump Data Centers,” “Bring down energy prices” and “Cuts kill.”
The protesters hope Mackenzie, who narrowly won election in 2024, will be removed from office in a Democratic wave in the November 3 midterm elections. The item says many view the midterms as a referendum on Trump, whose national approval ratings have fallen into the mid-30s.
Yvette Kuhns, 58, brought a plastic bin filled with cardboard signs for other demonstrators. Lynn Long, 72, said she brings a different sign almost every week and hopes the messages will make Trump supporters pay closer attention.
Some passing drivers honked and gave thumbs-up signs. Others made hostile gestures. Daniel Nickisher, an 80-year-old retired psychologist, said he keeps watch in case a vehicle tries to run the protesters down, but added that he believes the political mood is shifting against Republicans associated with Trump.
Uncertainty notes
The item does not identify the polling source for Trump's national approval ratings.
It is not yet known whether the protests will affect the November 3 election result.
