Thieves steal €5m of Antinori wine in Italy
Thieves stole 30,000 bottles of wine worth an estimated five million euros ($5.6 million) from the Marchesi Antinori winery in Italy, the company said on Friday.
The theft happened last weekend at a central Italy warehouse where the wines had been prepared for export. A company representative said the alarm was deactivated and the theft was discovered on Monday.
The stolen wines were three Antinori reds: Tignanello, Solaia and Guado al Tasso. The company representative said the bottles sell for 120 to 300 euros or more, depending on the vintage, and are prized by collectors.
The company believes two vans were used and that five or six people took part.
The theft follows the stealing last month of 3,000 bottles of Barolo in the northern Piedmont region, with those wines believed to be worth several hundred thousand euros.
Uncertainty notes
The identity of the thieves is not known from the supplied information.
