Thailand floods kill 60 since mid-September

Flooding in Thailand since mid-September has killed 60 people nationwide, the government said Wednesday, with river levels still rising in some regions.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said flooding was ongoing in 27 of Thailand's 77 provinces. It said central Prachinburi province remained badly affected, with 19 deaths and more than 188,000 people affected after overflowing rivers flooded homes in seven districts.

In Bangkok, four people have died since September 16 after a month's worth of rain fell over several days in late September, prompting a city-wide disaster declaration. Flooding in the capital has largely receded, and a major clean-up is underway before IMF and World Bank meetings begin next week.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul ordered government agencies on Monday to manage flooding and transport to avoid disruptions to the meetings.
