Syria oil pipeline damaged in sabotage attack
Syria's state petroleum company said an oil pipeline in the northeast of the country was damaged in a sabotage attack on Wednesday, the third such incident reported in recent weeks.
The Syrian Petroleum Company said the pipeline near Tal Hamis in Al-Hasakah Governorate was attacked at 6:00 am on October 7, causing damage. It said maintenance crews were working to isolate the damaged section and begin repair work.
The company said authorities arrested the alleged perpetrators and referred them to the judiciary.
State news agency SANA said sabotage targeting a gas pipeline in eastern Syria caused an explosion on September 29. In early October, an explosion at a gas pipeline near Damascus took three power stations offline.
The incidents follow demonstrations last month over rising fuel prices, which authorities linked to price increases caused by the Middle East war. Years of civil war before the fall of longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in late 2024 damaged Syria's oil, gas and electricity sectors, leaving the country heavily reliant on imports.
Uncertainty notes
The supplied material does not identify the alleged perpetrators.
The scale of the pipeline damage and any effect on oil supplies were not specified.
