Switzerland to tap diesel reserves after France delays
Switzerland will draw on strategic diesel reserves to cover delayed pipeline deliveries from France, the Federal Office for National Economic Supply said Friday.
The office said heavy rainfall in southern France had delayed deliveries and caused a short-term diesel shortage in an already tense supply situation. It said the withdrawals would offset the shortfall and keep Switzerland's diesel supply secure.
Up to 45,000 cubic metres may be drawn between October 23 and November 22, equal to just under four percent of the current stockpile.
FONES said international oil markets had been strained since the start of the Iran war and that Swiss logistics had also been disrupted for months by low water levels on the Rhine.
The office said gasoline and heating oil supplies were ensured, but the situation remained tense for all petroleum products. It also said the national supply of aviation fuel was guaranteed after purchases from kerosene stockpiles approved until November 1.
Uncertainty notes
The exact volume that will ultimately be drawn from diesel reserves is not yet known.
