Sudan drone strike kills 80, medic and witness say

A drone strike near a market in southern Sudan killed 80 people, mostly commuters waiting for trucks home, a medical source and a witness told AFP on Monday.

The strike hit the town of Al-Dibab in West Kordofan state on Sunday evening.

Ahmed Abakar Wadi, a witness, said he helped bury 50 bodies, including that of his brother Mohamed. He said 47 other people were taken to the nearby town of Al-Mujlad.

A medical source said 30 of those taken to Al-Mujlad died from their injuries. The medic said the total death toll from the Al-Dibab strike was 80.

The same medical source said another drone strike on Al-Mujlad injured four people who were being treated.

The RSF-declared administration, known as Tasis, accused Sudan's army of carrying out the Al-Dibab strike. Responsibility for the strike has not been independently established in the supplied information.

West Kordofan is under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Sudan's war between the army and the RSF began in April 2023.

Aid workers estimate the war has killed more than 200,000 people and created the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis.

Uncertainty notes

The death toll is based on accounts from a medical source and a witness and has not been independently confirmed in the supplied information.
Responsibility for the Al-Dibab strike is alleged by the RSF-declared administration and is not independently established here.
