Serbia students clean Belgrade after election win
Belgrade residents washed away political graffiti on Wednesday as Serbia's student-led movement prepared to govern after its election victory.
A student-backed list defeated the right-wing SNS nationalist party of Aleksandar Vucic in Sunday's national election, ending its 14-year rule.
On Wednesday, the student-led movement called on Belgrade residents to help restore buildings, streets and parks after two years of politically charged changes, including offensive graffiti on building facades.
Dozens of people whitewashed a tunnel in central Belgrade where opposing political slogans had been tagged during months of protests.
The clean-up followed an earlier effort on Monday, when students and other citizens cleared a park outside the presidency building that a pro-government encampment had occupied for more than a year.
The student-backed list has won over 52 percent of the vote so far, giving it about 140 of the 250 seats in parliament, according to the central election authority. Students must wait for the final vote count to be certified before parliament can be constituted and the movement can form a government and name a prime minister.
Uncertainty notes
The final vote count has not yet been certified.
