Second Yandex data centre hit by drone in Russia

A Ukrainian drone attack damaged a Yandex data centre in Kaluga, Russia, the company said Friday, the second strike on one of its facilities in two days.

Yandex said part of its data centre infrastructure in Kaluga was affected and that several modules were completely out of service. The company said some Yandex services could face disruptions while it assessed the full damage.

The regional governor in Kaluga said a drone attack struck the city’s infrastructure, causing casualties and damage. He said nine people were wounded, including five who were hospitalised in stable condition.

An attack the previous night caused a fire at a Yandex data centre in Sasovo, in Russia’s Ryazan region. That strike triggered major outages during the day, with users unable to access websites for key transport services and online shopping platforms.

Yandex runs Russia’s most popular search engine, as well as food-ordering and taxi apps used by tens of millions of people.

Uncertainty notes

The full extent of the damage to the Kaluga data centre was still being assessed.
The supplied material does not give independent confirmation of responsibility for the Kaluga drone attack beyond AFP's description.
