Samsung operating profit jumps 783% on AI chip demand
Samsung Electronics said Thursday that its July-September operating profit rose 783.1 percent from a year earlier to 107.4 trillion won, or $80.5 billion, as demand for AI semiconductors lifted the world's largest memory chipmaker.
The South Korean technology company said in a regulatory filing that net profit rose 514.6 percent year on year to 75.1 trillion won, while sales reached 195.2 trillion won.
Samsung said it was the first time any tech company had recorded quarterly operating profit of more than 100 trillion won.
The results were below figures in a Bloomberg survey of economists, which had predicted quarterly operating profit of 108.5 trillion won and net profit of 89.4 trillion won. Samsung shares were down more than 2.4 percent in Seoul on Thursday morning.
Samsung said its memory business had another record quarter as it focused on AI products amid capacity limits. It also said strong server demand pushed market prices higher across applications.
