Russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia kill eight, Ukraine says
Russian strikes on Ukraine's southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least eight people, including three children, regional authorities said Saturday.
Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the Defence Council of the Zaporizhzhia region, said at least 16 people were wounded and 12 were missing. Mykhailo Semikin, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, had earlier put the death toll at seven and said rescuers were searching for people who could still be trapped under rubble.
An AFP correspondent at the scene saw Ukrainian emergency services pulling people from the rubble.
Ukraine's national police said Russia targeted residential neighbourhoods in the city with five guided aerial bombs early Saturday, hitting two residential buildings.
The Zaporizhzhia region lies a few dozen kilometres from the front line, and the regional capital has been hit frequently during Russia's war in Ukraine. The strikes came a day after Ukrainian and European officials met in Miami in a renewed diplomatic push to end the war.
