Royal Mail plans up to 2,500 job cuts

Royal Mail plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs, about two percent of its workforce, as the British postal operator restructures after its 2025 takeover by Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky.

The company said Wednesday that the planned cuts would affect head office and support function roles and should be completed by the end of 2027.

Royal Mail said the reductions would come through voluntary redundancies and by not replacing staff who leave, including through retirement. It said there would be no reductions in operational frontline roles in delivery and mail processing.

The company said letter volumes had fallen by more than 70 percent from their peak, while demand for faster and more convenient parcel delivery services continued to grow.

Kretinsky's EP Group completed its £3.6 billion purchase of Royal Mail owner IDS in 2025. The UK government retained a golden share giving it veto power to ensure Royal Mail's headquarters and tax residency remain in the UK.
