Rhodes storm kills man swept out to sea in car
A 62-year-old man died on Rhodes on Wednesday when his car was swept out to sea during severe weather, Greece's fire service said.
Greece was hit by a second wave of strong rainfall and gale-force winds in two weeks. The civil protection ministry had warned on Tuesday that heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected in most parts of the country, with very gale-force winds in some areas.
Emergency authorities warned residents on Wednesday to limit movement in Rhodes, Evia and the Sporades island group in the Aegean.
The severe weather disrupted most ferry connections. Schools in several affected areas were closed as a precaution. Archaeological sites on Rhodes were also closed, and rockslides damaged parts of the island's road network.
The storm wave followed severe weather earlier in October, when floods damaged infrastructure, crops and livestock on Crete. During that earlier weather, a 79-year-old shepherd was found dead on Crete and a 58-year-old German tourist died after being struck by lightning on a Rhodes beach.
