Oregon school shooting kills 4, CNN and CBS report
CNN and CBS News reported that four people, three children and one adult, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Oregon on October 15, citing law enforcement. Police had confirmed multiple victims but had not confirmed the reported death toll.
Local police said children were among the victims and at least two people were taken to a hospital. Their condition was not known. Police said the assailant had been shot and killed.
Sheila Miller, a spokesperson for the Bend Police Department, said officers were alerted to a critical scene at 1:00 p.m. local time and arrived about two minutes later. She said officers soon heard that the suspect was down. Miller said police did not yet know who shot the suspect and that it may have been a bystander.
The Bend-La Pine School District first said Silver Rail Elementary School was under lockdown. It later said law enforcement was escorting students in buses to a separate location where families could reunite with their children.
“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families and to everyone affected by this violence.”
The school is about 170 miles southeast of Portland and serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade.
