Nigeria confirms first Ebola case since 2014
Nigeria said on Tuesday it had recorded its first Ebola case of Africa's latest outbreak, in a woman who travelled from Uganda to the capital Abuja.
Nigerian Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said the patient arrived on an international flight from Uganda and was admitted to a private hospital, where she received care for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. He said she is in isolation and receiving medical care.
Pate said contact tracing had begun, with 44 close contacts identified. Public health teams are monitoring people who may have been exposed, including healthcare workers, patients, caregivers and travel contacts.
Uganda's Health Ministry said late Tuesday that there were no confirmed active Ebola cases in Uganda and that travel through Uganda does not establish that infection occurred there.
Kenya's health ministry also reported its ninth Ebola case of the outbreak on Tuesday. It said the patient is a 24-year-old man and a close family member of the first Kenyan case. The ministry said he was already in quarantine when he became ill, was isolated at the first sign of illness and began treatment after a positive test.
The Democratic Republic of Congo declared a major Ebola outbreak in May. DRC health authorities have reported 4,381 deaths among more than 9,000 confirmed cases.
Jean Kaseya, director general of Africa CDC, said the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak had become the most geographically widespread Ebola outbreak in history, affecting countries across three regions of Africa. He urged international support, including money, medical supplies and health workers, and said the mortality rate in DRC was approaching 50%.
The United States warned its citizens on Tuesday against travel to Kenya because of health risks.
