Newcastle car crash injures 10 rugby league fans

Police said a car crashed into a crowd of rugby league fans in Newcastle, Australia, on Saturday, injuring 10 people including children.

Two people were in critical condition: a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man. Police said two other young children were hurt.

Thousands of supporters had gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights before their grand final match against the Sydney Roosters on Sunday.

Police said an 18-year-old fan who was “driving erratically” lost control of his vehicle and went into the crowd. The driver was taken into custody.

Newcastle Mayor Gavin Morris told ABC the driver had been revving the car and appeared to be excited before losing control.

New South Wales roads minister Jenny Aitchison said one person's decision had put everyone at risk. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said his thoughts were with everyone injured or involved.

Uncertainty notes

Police did not provide a final account of how the driver lost control.
