Milan clashes: more than 200 arrested, Ansa says

Police in Milan have arrested more than 200 people since Saturday after two days of clashes around the central Duomo plaza, Ansa news agency reported.

Youths and police clashed again on Sunday, with groups throwing objects at police cars, ransacking stores and damaging property. Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse groups in the square.

A supermarket on a shopping street off the Duomo plaza was ransacked, garbage cans were overturned and scooters and bicycles were vandalised.

The clashes began Saturday on the sidelines of a sanctioned cost-of-living demonstration. Similar trouble took place in Bologna and Turin after other protests.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called a security meeting for Monday to address the violence. Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala told Ansa he had seen “smashed shop windows, looted stores, and frightened citizens.”
