Mexico school knife attack kills assistant principal, injures 3

Two 18-year-old former students armed with knives and fireworks killed a female assistant principal and injured three other people at a school in Torreon, in Mexico's northern Coahuila state, local authorities said Thursday.

State prosecutor Federico Fernandez said the alleged attackers entered the school, attacked staff first and then targeted students. He said the preliminary motive they gave was a personal vendetta against the school.

Fernandez said at least one of the injured people was in critical condition. He did not give the ages of the wounded.

Deadly school attacks are rare in Mexico. The most recent deadly school attack in the country before this incident took place in March, when two teachers at a private school in western Michoacan state were shot dead, allegedly by a 15-year-old student.

Uncertainty notes

The ages of the wounded were not given.
The motive was described as preliminary.
