Meta user terms temporarily banned by Norway court

A Norwegian court temporarily barred Meta on Wednesday from enforcing new user terms that Norwegian media outlets said would threaten their rights to their content.

Ten media groups argued that the terms, due to take effect on November 20, would let Meta collect their articles, photos and videos, including paywalled content. They said the material could be used to develop artificial intelligence products, among other uses.

The Oslo court prohibited Meta from making the contested change until there is a definitive ruling on whether it is legal. The emergency decision was issued without hearing Meta.

“Media groups risk losing control of editorial content built up over many years,” the judge said.

Meta said it wanted full consultation before making policy changes. A spokesperson said the company expected that consultation could extend beyond November 20 and that it would delay implementation of the updated terms if needed.

The plaintiffs include public broadcaster NRK, media groups Schibsted, Amedia, Polaris and Aller, and Norwegian news agency NTB.

Uncertainty notes

The court has not made a definitive ruling on the legality of the contested terms.
Meta did not directly address the allegations about rights to content in the supplied statement.
