Macron popularity hits presidency low, poll says

French President Emmanuel Macron's popularity has fallen to its lowest level since he took office in 2017, according to an Ipsos BVA-Cesi poll published on Saturday.

The survey found that 15 percent of respondents had a favourable view of Macron, down one point from a month earlier.

The poll was published as France faces record fuel prices and protests by high school students. Respondents listed purchasing power as their top concern, followed by worries including the future of the welfare system and France's debt levels.

Among politicians seen as possible successors to Macron, far-right leaders Jordan Bardella and Marine Le Pen remained the most popular in the poll, with approval ratings of 33 percent and 32 percent. Bardella was down three points and Le Pen down four from a month earlier.

The poll was commissioned by La Tribune Dimanche and conducted online on September 7-8 among 1,000 adults. It had a margin of error of 0.6 to 3.1 percentage points.

Uncertainty notes

The poll is a survey of 1,000 adults and is subject to its stated margin of error.
