JD Vance blames immigration for France protest violence
US Vice President JD Vance blamed immigration and problems of assimilation for violence during protests in France, posting on X on Saturday while sharing a video showing Limoges city hall on fire.
Vance wrote that Western liberals had brought people into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion and had ignored questions of assimilation and compatibility.
He added that he hoped France would stop what he called “this madness” before more landmarks burned.
Vance also linked the events to US politics before November 3 congressional midterm races, saying Americans should pay attention and claiming the scenes represented the future sought by congressional Democrats.
Major protests took place across France on Saturday against soaring inflation. Police clashed with demonstrators as marches were followed by street violence, looting and fires.
Vance, who is seen as a potential Republican presidential candidate in 2028, has often criticised European immigration policies.
Uncertainty notes
The cause of the violence and any role of immigration are not independently established.
