Italy flights disrupted by air traffic data problem
Flights in Italy were delayed and cancelled on Friday after data transmission problems affected air traffic control across the country, Italy's air navigation agency ENAV said.
ENAV said anomalies were detected overnight in the data transmission network that supports air traffic control services nationwide. It said it introduced flow regulation measures from 6:00 am to maintain operational safety.
The agency said the measures temporarily reduced the capacity to manage aircraft in Italian airspace.
ENAV said it had identified the source of the problem and ruled out malicious acts. It said it was working to determine the cause and restore full system functionality.
The Rome Airports website warned of delays and cancellations. In Milan, several flights were delayed by between half an hour and more than two hours, while others were cancelled.
Uncertainty notes
The precise technical cause of the data transmission problem was still being investigated.
