Greek refinery accident death toll rises to two
The death toll from an accident at Motor Oil's refinery near Athens has risen to two, Greece's ANA news agency reported Sunday.
Motor Oil had reported the death of one worker after the Friday accident at the refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, near Corinth. ANA said a second worker, aged 42, died in hospital after suffering critical head injuries.
Motor Oil said the accident happened during a preventive maintenance operation and that it was fully cooperating with an official investigation. The company did not give details of what happened.
Greek media said an explosion occurred at the site. Earlier reporting said three other workers were lightly injured and that police detained a site supervisor over the incident.
The refinery has had previous industrial accidents. One man died and three others were injured in an explosion at a refinery medical room in 2020, and three maintenance workers died there in 2002 after inhaling poisonous fumes in a fuel tank. Four people were injured in a 2024 fire at the refinery, which is owned by the Vardinogiannis group.
