Greek basketball chief held in match-fixing probe
Greece's basketball federation chief Vangelis Liolios was held Wednesday in a match-fixing probe involving several suspects and games dating back a decade, state agency ANA said.
ANA said Liolios will appear before a magistrate for testimony on Thursday. The agency said warrants issued by a sports prosecutor also target three referees, a referee advisor and a former athlete.
About 50 games in the Greek top flight and lower leagues are under investigation as far back as 2016, ANA said.
The basketball federation had not commented on the case in the supplied material.
Liolios, 59, is a pediatrician by trade and was elected federation chief in 2021. He was previously chairman of Promitheas Patras and founded the Greek coffee chain Coffee Island.
