GM US sales fall as Toyota and Hyundai gain

General Motors reported lower third-quarter US auto sales on Thursday as electric vehicle transactions fell, while Toyota and Hyundai posted gains helped by stronger hybrid demand.

GM said deliveries fell 5.5 percent from a year earlier to 670,974 vehicles. Sales gains for some gasoline-powered vehicles did not fully offset lower electric vehicle sales.

The comparison was affected by a boom in electric vehicle sales in the third quarter of 2025, when consumers bought before a US tax credit expired on September 30, 2025 after a policy change backed by President Donald Trump.

GM said sales of the electric version of the Chevrolet Equinox SUV fell by more than 90 percent from that period. It said sales of “affordable small SUVs” rose 27 percent, with gains for the Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Buick Envista.

Toyota reported a 0.6 percent rise in third-quarter sales to 633,223 vehicles, supported by 29.2 percent growth in “electrified vehicles,” a category dominated by hybrids at the company.

Hyundai said hybrid sales rose 35 percent in the quarter. Its overall sales rose 5.4 percent from a year earlier to 483,555 vehicles.

Cox Automotive estimated that overall third-quarter US auto sales would be 4.1 million units, down 0.7 percent from a year earlier.
