Gambia students protest over university conditions
Hundreds of students demonstrated at the University of The Gambia in Banjul on Monday over deteriorating study conditions, food and internet access, AFP journalists reported.
The protest at the country's leading higher education institution came a day after the student union said students faced inadequate transport, limited drinking water, a closed canteen, unreliable internet and disruptions to academic activities.
The Ministry of Higher Education said it had taken note of the concerns and called for constructive dialogue. It said the demands required ongoing attention, coordination and practical solutions.
The government announced measures on Saturday including the resumption of catering services from Monday, more water dispensers, better transport services and improved internet connectivity.
The student union still called a mass mobilisation and urged participants to remain peaceful.
Uncertainty notes
The supplied material does not state whether the protest caused arrests, injuries or disruption beyond the demonstration itself.
