Flavio Bolsonaro visits father before Brazil runoff
Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro visited his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, at his Brasilia residence on Tuesday, less than two weeks before Brazil's October 25 runoff election.
The conservative senator received Supreme Court authorisation on Monday to visit Jair Bolsonaro as long as he did not involve him in campaigning. AFP journalists saw Flavio Bolsonaro arrive in a convoy at the residence where the former president is serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest.
Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, will face leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the runoff after receiving 47 percent of the first-round vote, compared with Lula's 45 percent.
Jair Bolsonaro, 71, remains the leader of his far-right political movement. His image appears prominently at rallies held by his son, who has promised to overturn his father's conviction if elected.
Flavio Bolsonaro had been barred from visiting his father since July after reading out a letter from him on YouTube, despite Jair Bolsonaro being banned from using social media, either directly or through a third party.
Jair Bolsonaro is serving his sentence under house arrest for health reasons stemming from a stab wound he suffered during the 2018 campaign in which he was elected president. He was convicted of plotting a coup attempt after losing the 2022 presidential election to Lula.
