Ethiopia camp drone strikes kill at least 14, witnesses say

Drone strikes on a camp for displaced people in Ethiopia's Amhara region killed at least 14 people, including children, on Thursday, three witnesses told AFP.

One witness, Yasin, said four strikes were carried out one after another at the camp about 400 kilometres northeast of Addis Ababa. He said 14 people were buried at the displacement centre and two more died while receiving medical treatment.

Two other camp residents gave death tolls of 14 and 15 and said several children were among the dead. One witness said the strikes happened as students were coming home from school.

The ACLED conflict monitor said between 16 and 23 people were killed and an unknown number of people were injured. Ethiopia's federal army spokesperson had not responded to AFP questions.

Witnesses said the displaced people were originally from Oromia, which neighbours Amhara. Federal forces have carried out numerous drone strikes in Amhara, where nearly half a million people are displaced, according to UN figures published in July. The Oromo Liberation Army, designated a terrorist organisation by Addis Ababa, has fought federal forces in Oromia for more than eight years.

Uncertainty notes

The final death and injury tolls are unclear because witnesses and ACLED gave different figures.
Responsibility for the strikes was not established in the supplied information.
The Ethiopian federal army had not responded to AFP questions at the time described.
