Cuba wins UN embargo vote with weakest backing since 1995

The UN General Assembly adopted a new resolution on Wednesday calling for an end to the US economic, trade and financial embargo against Cuba, but support fell to its lowest level since 1995.

The resolution received 130 votes in favor, with 17 against and 25 abstentions. Similar resolutions have been put to a vote nearly every year since 1992 and have passed.

This year's Cuban resolution included a reference to the impact of US restrictions on fuel supplies to the island since January.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on X that the world had again spoken out against the blockade despite what he called US pressure and blackmail. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez accused Washington of trying to determine Cuba's future and seize its wealth.

US ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz denied before the vote that Cuba was under a blockade and said the Cuban people's difficulties were the fault of the country's government. He said Cuban ports were open and that shipments had arrived from around the world.

The vote followed a shouting match between Cuban and US representatives at the General Assembly a day earlier, during debate over the resolution.

Uncertainty notes

Cuban allegations of US pressure and US claims about responsibility for conditions in Cuba are disputed.
