Chris Brown gets suspended sentence over London brawl
American singer Chris Brown was given an eight-month jail term suspended for one year by a UK court on Monday after pleading guilty to affray over a 2023 brawl at a London nightclub.
The suspended sentence means Brown will not be imprisoned unless he commits another offence during the period. He had admitted the offence at an appearance in July.
Judge Tony Baumgartner told Southwark Crown Court that violence in a crowded nightclub was serious because it created a risk to the targeted person and to others.
Prosecutors had accused Brown and co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu of carrying out what they called a vicious and unprovoked attack at Tape, a private members' club in London, on February 19, 2023. They alleged Brown used a glass bottle to strike the victim's head twice.
The guilty plea avoided a trial on several other charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bottle as an offensive weapon. Brown had previously denied those charges.
Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray over the London incident. He was sentenced to four months' imprisonment suspended for one year.
