California wildfires burn homes south of Los Angeles

Wildfires driven by Santa Ana winds burned through parts of Southern California on Friday, scorching homes south of Los Angeles and prompting evacuation orders.

The Orange County Fire Authority said the Norte fire had burned about 465 acres in San Juan Capistrano and that at least four homes had been impacted. It said firefighters were attacking the fire from the ground and air and urged people to stay away.

Officials warned nearby residents about poor air quality. The National Weather Service warned of a high risk of large fires and rapid fire growth, especially across Los Angeles and Ventura counties and mountain and foothill areas of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Cal Fire said the Bryson fire near Malibu was at 147 acres and 17 percent contained on Friday afternoon. It said the Henderson Fire affected Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, prompted freeway closures and had burned at least 2,070 acres.

Authorities de-energized power lines to reduce the risk of wind-carried sparks, leaving tens of thousands of customers in Los Angeles County without power. Forecasters said fire danger would remain through much of Saturday, with mountain winds of 50 to 70 mph and some temperatures reaching 100 F.
