Art Basel Paris to close early over protest risk
Art Basel Paris will close two days early because of the risk of demonstrations in the French capital this weekend, organisers said on Thursday.
The art fair, held at the Grand Palais, had been due to run until Sunday but will now finish on Friday evening. In a message to visitors, organisers said the move was made to protect visitors, exhibitors, partners, staff and artworks.
The fair features more than 200 galleries from around the world. It welcomed 73,000 people last year.
French authorities have promised a 20% increase in security forces on Saturday after looting and violence in cities across France the previous weekend. Paris will also host an NFL game and a Paris Saint-Germain match on Sunday, adding pressure on police resources.
Uncertainty notes
The source does not say whether specific demonstrations are confirmed for the fair site or elsewhere in Paris.
