American Airlines posts $269 million quarterly loss

American Airlines reported a $269 million third-quarter loss on Thursday and warned of another loss in the current quarter as higher jet fuel costs weighed on its results.

The loss was larger than the $114 million loss the airline reported in the same period a year earlier. Revenue rose 19.3% to $16.3 billion, helped by strong travel demand.

American said the third-quarter result amounted to a loss of 41 cents per share, or an adjusted loss of 28 cents per share excluding a one-time tax item. It projected a fourth-quarter adjusted loss of 50 cents to $1.10 per share and a full-year adjusted loss of $1.00 to $1.60 per share.

Chief executive Robert Isom said the airline had seen fuel expense grow by $7 billion over the year. He said American could be profitable in 2027 and suggested the company may lean toward lower capacity because of the fuel price rise.

American shares rose 3.4% in morning trading.
