Afghan-Pakistan border clash kills one, officials say

Pakistani officials said Wednesday that a clash on the Afghan-Pakistan border killed one person and injured five.

The office of the deputy commissioner in South Waziristan district, in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said homes and shops were targeted in the market town of Angoor Adda during cross-border fire from Afghanistan. It blamed Afghanistan's Taliban authorities for what it called an unprovoked attack.

A senior administrative official in South Waziristan said the casualties were caused by mortar fire from Afghanistan. The official said Pakistani forces responded with a brief artillery operation targeting an Afghan checkpoint, but could not confirm any casualties on the Afghan side.

A security official in Angoor Adda also confirmed the attack. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governor Faisal Karim Kundi condemned what he called aggression against civilian homes.

Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of harbouring militants responsible for deadly attacks on its territory. Afghanistan's Taliban government denies the allegation.

Uncertainty notes

Casualties on the Afghan side of the border were not confirmed.
The account of responsibility and the description of the attack as unprovoked come from Pakistani officials.
