AfD state motion calls to end Ukraine military aid
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany and the far-left BSW passed an advisory motion in Saxony-Anhalt's regional parliament on Wednesday calling for an end to German military aid for Ukraine and for normalising relations with Russia.
The motion urged Saxony-Anhalt's government to raise sanctions relief for Russia and an end to aid for Ukraine in the Bundesrat, Germany's upper house made up of the 16 federal states. It said financial support for Ukraine beyond humanitarian aid should stop immediately and called for sanctions on Moscow to be lifted.
The motion also called for an immediate ceasefire and peace negotiations with Russia. It did not mention Russia's responsibility for starting the war by invading Ukraine.
The AfD won Saxony-Anhalt's state election last month and has teamed up with the BSW to form a working majority. Both parties oppose Western sanctions on Russia and German military support for Ukraine.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pledged to keep supporting Kyiv and has accused Russia of carrying out sabotage, disinformation and espionage against Germany. Moscow has refused peace talks or a ceasefire unless its demands, including large areas of Ukrainian territory, are met.
Uncertainty notes
It remains unclear whether AfD leader Ulrich Siegmund can secure enough votes to become Saxony-Anhalt state premier.
