Ukraine gets $260m Canada air defence pledge

Canada announced CAN$350 million, or US$260 million, to strengthen Ukraine's air defences as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Calgary on Thursday.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the support alongside Zelensky and said Canada and Ukraine had also reached a drone production deal. The leaders signed a separate agreement pledging to conclude a “hundred-year partnership.”

Carney said Canada would also provide CAN$450 million in loan guarantees to support Ukraine's energy supply. He said the money would help repair damaged infrastructure, increase storage capacity and improve power supply to hospitals, with the aim of helping Ukrainians through winter.

Zelensky said the agreements would help protect Ukraine's skies as Russia's war continues. On the drone deal, he said 30 percent of the drones would go immediately to Ukraine's battlefield needs.

Asked about possible negotiations to ease the fighting, Zelensky said he did not expect substantive talks during Russia's ongoing election period. He said he planned to meet US President Donald Trump in New York in late September, likely on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, as Washington tries to revive long-stalled talks to end the war.
