Zambia treason arrest raises democracy concerns
The detention of Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile on treason charges after last month's election has intensified concerns about the country's democratic resilience, according to analysts and regional figures.
Mundubile, the main challenger and distant runner-up to President Hakainde Hichilema, is being held at Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison. The allegations against him had not been examined by the courts nearly a month after his detention.
Hichilema, who won a second term, was himself jailed for 18 weeks on treason charges in 2017 while in opposition. He had vowed not to use the same political tactic if he came to power.
Former Botswana president Ian Khama told AFP that Mundubile's arrest set “a very, very bad precedent” and said Zambia was showing “autocratic tendencies”. Louw Nel, an analyst at Oxford Economics Africa, said legal cases can tie up political challengers and warn others.
The concerns also include the role of security forces around the August 13 vote. Soldiers were present for the close of polling, at a raid the next day on opposition members in which a former minister was killed, and outside courts before the deadline for election challenges. No challenge to the result was ultimately filed.
Human Rights Watch said in a 2025 report that Hichilema's first term included arrests and prosecutions of opposition figures. UN special rapporteur Gina Romero said the postponement and later cancellation of the RightsCon digital rights conference, along with election arrests and intimidation, reflected shrinking civic space. The government rejected Romero's statement, saying it prejudged matters before the courts.
