Xi Jinping lands in US before Trump summit
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s plane landed at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday ahead of a summit with US President Donald Trump.
Trump was waiting at the airport to greet Xi, whose arrival began a three-day state visit near Washington.
Beijing had said Xi would visit the United States from September 23 to 25 for talks with Trump. A US official had said Trump would personally welcome Xi at Joint Base Andrews before meetings the following day.
The meeting comes as the United States and China try to ease tensions over trade, technology and wider strategic issues. The two countries have maintained a tariff truce for nearly a year but have not reached a lasting agreement.
Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, Beijing’s top trade negotiator, is also in the United States for meetings with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Taiwan and US pressure related to Iran also remain among the issues weighing on relations between Washington and Beijing.
