Xi Jinping meets Narendra Modi in New Delhi

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday while attending the 18th BRICS Summit, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported.

CCTV said the meeting took place on the afternoon of September 12 local time and gave no further details.

Xi's trip is his first to India since 2019. India is hosting the September 12-13 BRICS summit in its capital.

The meeting comes during a cautious easing of ties between the two nuclear-armed neighbours after years of tension. India and China have gradually restored flights, visas and high-level contacts after a deadly 2020 military clash along their disputed Tibetan border.

The underlying territorial dispute remains unresolved, and both sides retain military deployments along their roughly 3,500-kilometre high-altitude border along Tibet.

The BRICS summit is expected to focus on the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, global trade turbulence and energy security.
