Uttar Pradesh rain kills at least 56, agency says

Heavy rain triggered floods and landslides in India's Uttar Pradesh state, killing at least 56 people over three days, the state Relief Commissioner's office said on Sunday.

The office said more than 1,000 houses were damaged after a depression over the Bay of Bengal moved inland and intensified rainfall across the region.

It said the state recorded 66.5 millimetres of rain between Friday and Sunday, compared with a season average of 7.6 millimetres.

Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, is frequently hit by rain and thunderstorms during the June-to-September monsoon season.
