US probes Iran wedding strike but Vance skeptical
US Vice President Vance said Washington is probing an alleged strike on a wedding in Iran but is “skeptical,” after Tehran blamed the United States for the attack.
Iranian authorities said the Tuesday night strike in the coastal town of Kuhestak, along the Strait of Hormuz, killed at least four people, including a child, and wounded 68 others. Iranian officials called the attack a “war crime”.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards chief Ahmad Vahidi vowed Thursday to avenge the people killed. “The pure blood of these oppressed martyrs... will not go unanswered and will definitely be avenged,” Vahidi said in a statement carried by Iranian state television.
Washington had not directly addressed the wedding strike before Vance's remarks. A US Central Command spokesperson had said “the US military never targets civilians”. The United States had announced attacks against targets belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
Iranian media and officials have also reported other casualties from US attacks in southern Iran and elsewhere, including six naval personnel reported by Tasnim, three Basij paramilitary members reported by the Revolutionary Guards, four IRGC Aerospace Force members reported by Fars news agency and seven people reported killed in Khuzestan by a provincial official quoted by IRNA. The reports did not make clear whether any figures overlapped.
Iran has been at war since February 28, when the United States and Israel launched a bombing campaign that killed its supreme leader. An April ceasefire ended the initial phase of intense bombardment, but sporadic exchanges have continued, particularly in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
