US diesel price hits record $5.90 a gallon, AAA says
The average US diesel price rose to a record $5.9015 a gallon on Monday, the AAA motorists' association said, after damage to Gulf refineries during the war against Iran disrupted supplies.
The price was about 30 cents higher than the average one week earlier, AAA said. Diesel is widely used in road hauling, agriculture and construction, so higher prices are adding costs for truckers and farmers and could be passed on to consumers.
Diesel cost an average $3.71 a gallon a year earlier.
Fuel prices have increased since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran six months ago. The ongoing war against Tehran has affected tanker shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, sending fuel prices higher across the board.
Average gasoline prices stood at $4.15 a gallon on Monday, up from $3.20 a year earlier. AAA said gasoline prices were higher in some western states, including $5.86 in California and $4.54 in Arizona.
The increases are putting pressure on President Donald Trump ahead of November midterm congressional elections. Trump has promised to address higher living costs.

North Carolina farmer Derrick Austin told AFP that higher diesel costs could add about $15,000 to his fall harvest costs.
Afdhal Rahman of OCBC said refined fuel prices have risen meaningfully and outpaced crude oil prices.
