Ukraine to split air alerts after Russian strikes

Ukraine will introduce a two-tier air-raid alert system after repeated Russian strikes disrupted Kyiv and other cities, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday.

Zelensky said public warning systems would be revised and two levels introduced for specific threats. He said yellow would generally indicate a drone raid, while red would indicate a missile threat, including ballistic or large-scale attacks.

Under the revised rules, curfew hours in Kyiv will be reduced. During a yellow-level threat, one metro line crossing the Dnieper River will operate in full.

Zelensky said the measures were a response to Russia's changing tactics and its use of drones to wear down civilian life and disrupt economic activity.

Jet-powered drones have been attacking Kyiv and surrounding areas since last week, triggering repeated air alerts and disrupting businesses and traffic. The metro has stopped crossing the Dnieper during alerts, splitting movement across the capital.

Zelensky said earlier that at least 10 people were wounded in Russian attacks on Wednesday. Drones struck sites across the capital, including a university building during classes. Zelensky said 160 students were in a shelter at the time.

A Russian attack on an ammunition depot over the weekend killed 38 people in the capital's suburbs.
